Russia has recorded more than 21,000 patients who tested positive for the novel coronavirus, with the majority of them located in Moscow, a government agency said. The number of new cases is now nearing 3,000.

The country’s pool of confirmed cases now stands at 21,102 as of Tuesday afternoon, according to consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor. The figure includes 2,774 new patients registered across the country over the past day.

The majority of new cases – almost 1,500 – have been recorded in the Russian capital of Moscow, followed by 460 in the surrounding region, and 121 in St. Petersburg.

President Vladimir Putin said the situation “is changing almost daily and, unfortunately, not for the better.” Tatiana Golikova, the deputy prime minister in charge of handling the coronavirus response, said it was “unpleasant” to see the daily figures rise.

Russia hasn’t yet reached the peak of its Covid-19 outbreak, with health officials suggesting it could happen by the end of April. Previously, President Putin extended the nationwide paid holiday to April 30 in an effort to encourage citizens to stay indoors.

In order to contain the spread of the disease. Moscow authorities told residents to self-isolate, restricting their mobility to a handful of essential activities. This week, they have also introduced electronic permits required to go to work, consult a doctor or move around the city using public transportation or a car.
