The Italian government will close all schools, universities and other education institutions until the middle of March, local media reports, as the country grapples with the worsening coronavirus crisis.

The decision was apparently taken after a meeting between Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and his cabinet at the Palazzo Chigi on Wednesday afternoon.

Italy is the worst-affected country outside of Asia, with a Covid-19 death toll of at least 79 as of Tuesday, and with over 2,500 cases confirmed throughout the country.
